Marcel took a deep breath as he held onto the outer skin of the ship and let his body slide into the abyss. He hung for a moment, judging the distance, then he dropped to the deck. Everything in the space seemed jumbled up, as befit a crashed ship. There were several crates lying around and lots of broken glass. The odor inside the ship was considerably worse than outside, and he gagged as he got accustomed to it.

None of the things lying around had any sort of markings, which didn’t help his cause. Swallowing, he turned toward the front of the ship. A mangled pile marked the remains of what appeared to be some sort of cat, which had hit the front bulkhead at a high rate of speed next to a small passageway.

Well, at least it isn’t some sort of alien ship, Marcel thought, although he didn’t recognize the breed of cat. It was smashed up pretty well, though, so that didn’t bother him.

Squaring his shoulders, he followed the passageway, figuring the cockpit lay at the end. The ceiling was so low, he had to traverse it on his hands and knees, and there were doors on both sides, but he didn’t see a means of accessing them. The smell got stronger the further he went, and he took a second to swallow a couple of times and get his stomach under control, then he continued. The space opened up into what looked like a cockpit, although the dashboards were smooth and blank. Not a single dial or gauge marked the material.

He glanced to both sides in the dim light and saw what he’d expected. A person sat in both seats, but the collapse of the ship’s bow had sandwiched them in place. He studied the one on the left first and saw a couple of spars had been driven through him, although he was unable to see the pilot’s face through the oversize goggles he wore. The pilot had some sort of silvery flight suit, unlike anything Marcel had ever seen, and his arm, where it stuck out of it, was hairy enough to be called fur.

Turning his attention to the one on the right, he didn’t see any outward sign of damage. This one was smaller but the patches of skin he should have been able to see were also covered in fur. A flash of silver as he looked down caught his eye. Wait. Is that a second arm on its left side?

Marcel looked closer; there was a second arm, and there was only one body. A second body might have been the source… but there was only one. The right side of the body also had two arms.

Marcel looked back to the one on the left. It also had four arms; he’d just missed them in the dark.

Sad. Loss.

The thought came to him unbidden. The crash was sad, sure, as well as the loss of life, but the thought hadn’t been his. He’d experienced them…but he didn’t know why.
